If you call the airline the day before the trip, they'll charge you the last-minute fare for the infant which is usually a lot more expensive than the regular fare. And if you just show up with the baby, they will deny him boarding. Since you have to pay for the baby anyway, you should get an infant seat fare and not a lap baby. That way you can bring the car-seat in and put the baby in that.
