Can I earn frequent flier miles when I travel using a "free" award ticket?

By · Monday, June 29th, 2009

To elaborate, if I buy a ticket using my frequent flier miles (say, on US Airways), will I be awarded miles for that travel? I ask this because, it is technically not a free ticket when I spend my miles to buy one.

The answer is a definite no. You can put it into your record so that you can have status while boarding your flight but that would be it.

No. You won't be awarded more miles if you're using an award travel ticket.

Depends on the airline. Some airlines give you miles if you're paying your flight taxes.

There are no US carriers that will give you award mileage for travel on an award ticket. You are correct in that it was not free, however you did not pay cash.
