How to buy a cheap ticket when holidays are one week away?

It is a week away from xmas and I have not purchased my ticket to UTAH.. I know I might no be able to find a good deal, but I have heard that sometimes purchasing the same day ( Dec 23 or 24) works better… Is it true? What sites do you recommend?
