Visiting Cancun. Any tips for must do excurison/sightseing activities?

By admin · Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Traveling with a 4 year old and 65 year old grandma. We will be there for a week.
1. should I book excursions prior to getting to Cancun? are there any discounts avail for Xcaret, Chichen Itz tours?
2. recommend economy family friendly hotels close to beach/shopping/night life?
3. should we rent a car? we want to do Xcaret, Chichen Itza, Cozumel, Tulum
do hotels have airport pickups and drop offs?
4. top 5-6 must do things in Cancun? can Cozumel be done in a day?

Please help…

1. I would wait until you got there and book the excursions at the resort; then the bus will pick you up at the hotel and deliver you back there. It is cheaper to book Xcaret online:
http://www.xcaret.com/

But then you’ve got get yourself to the Xcaret bus pickup point right next to the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Hotel, in front of Plaza Caracol shopping center. Daily departures at 8:30am.

If you book through the resort, you’ll get the transportation, a guide, lunch and be able to close your eyes on the trip back after a day of activity.

2. Click this link to check out photos and details on the Park Royal Cancun:

Kids under six stay free, and it’s close to the La Isla shopping center.

3. Having a car does have it’s advantages–you can depart and return when you want. It’s about a two hour drive over to Chichen Itza and you can usually pick up a guide at the entrance if you want someone to explain the structures and history. A car will be convenient for the trip down to Playa del Carmen to catch the ferry to Cozumel. Ferry times and prices are on this link:

4. If you’re going to do Tulum, it’s a lot smaller than Chichen Itza. and you can see all of Tulum in under two hours. As long as your that far south, you should go to Xel-ha for the rest of the day:

The only other thing you might want to add to the things you’ve already got planned is Selvatica–the adventure kingdom, if grandma wants to try the zip lines:

And with a car you may want to explore other Maya ruins. Click this map to see how many there are on the Yucatan peninsula:
